A meeting was held on 6th December 2005 in Fairburn Church Hall bringing together residents from local villages, members of AIRE & medical professionals to hear Dr Van Steenis talk about environmental issues. Help Tracing Furniss Family History
Nick Furniss from Bracknell, Berkshire has has contacted us asking for help in researching his family history.
He knows that several Furniss family members were born in Burton Salmon around 1835. They were the children of Thomas Furniss and Phebe nee Nicholson born Peckfield 1798. He knows that his great-grandfather served in the Guards but so far has no details of his service career. He is trying to find firm connections to our village.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Green Bins
According to Selby DC, we will be getting green bins for recycling garden waste eventually. However, it may well now NOT be before April 2006. The scheme is operating successfully in Hillam & Monk Fryston.

We understand that the mobile phone mast would be sited in the railway yard at the rear of the houses on Hillam Lane (opposite the War Memorial).

July 2005
Mobile Phone Mast
A special meeting was held recently to discuss the possibility of a mobile phone mast being sited close to the village.

April 2005
Garden Refuse
We understand that residents should be receiving a second "green" wheelie bin for garden waste in the near future. A similar scheme has operated in the Wakefield MDC area for some time and pilot schemes in North Yorkshire have apparently been successful. We don't have a date for delivery of the new bins.

April 2005
Historical Anniversaries
The 60th anniversary of VE Day is just around the corner (8th May) and we have also heard there may be an event to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar (21st October). This may feature the lighting of a beacon as part of a countrywide chain of beacons. Please let us know if you are planning anything for these or any other events.

March 2005
With Sadness
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Alan Webster who had lived in Burton Salmon for most of his life. Alan often gave his time and effort to help people and he was a willing volunteer with many projects that benefited the village. Among his many achievements during his lifetime was a very successful period as captain of the village Cricket Team.

Various Articles by Ronald Addyman
We are delighted that interest continues to be generated both in this country and abroad by the articles by Ronald Addyman which are featured on this website. The latest enquiry came from Morten Harangen, a Norwegian journalist who is researching a book about British anglers who went to Norway in the 1800's and early 1900's to fish salmon. Mr Harangen apparently found the reference to Colonel Gascoigne in Ronald Addyman's article "The Boer War 1899 - 1902: Colonel Gascoigne and the Leeds Volunteers". Colonel Gascoigne was one of the anglers being researched! Read more.

Proposed Asphalt Plant - Ferrybridge
At the meeting of Wakefield District Council Planning Committee on 20th February 2004, campaigners opposed to the proposed development were pleased to hear members of the planning committee express serious doubts about the application. Councillors voted against the proposal, but agreed to defer the final decision to the next available meeting to allow an opportunity to examine the reasons for refusal in more depth. Find out more.

January 2004
Broadband Internet Access
A village resident has kindly made us aware of another option in the move towards Broadband internet access. Broadband offers high speed access without leaving your phone line engaged. Many local villages are campaigning to persuade enough residents to register their interest with Broadband providers. For information about one company offering "wireless broadband", you can check out www.ehotspots.co.uk. For more general information on the progress being made across the district, visit Selby District Council's Broadband page.

January 2004
Proposed Asphalt Plant at Ferrybridge
The proposal is to build a large asphalt plant on a site which is less than 2 miles from the centre of our village. Campaigners who oppose the plan believe this is a vital health issue for ALL of us and are actively seeking the support of residents. Volunteers are organising a number of fund-raising events to help towards the costs of the campaign. Find out more.

Village Christmas Lights

On 15th December 2003  around 100 people gathered to see the village Christmas lights switched on. Free mince pies and drinks were served in the Methodist Church, Main Street. Over 40 children met Santa and received a free gift. The Christmas tree was one of the best we've had in recent years and the lights looked great.

Thank you to everybody who came along. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time and effort to make the event possible. Thank you to Burton Salmon Parish Council for their financial support. Thanks to Burton Salmon Methodist Church for their hospitality and support. Thank you also to The Plough Inn and customers who donated additional money to purchase extra lights. Volunteers are hoping to raise more money during the year to make the 2004 display even better. If you want to be involved in any way with future displays or have any suggestions about how the event could be improved, please contact us.

December 2003
Asphalt Plant - Ferrybridge
The application to build a temporary and a permanent asphalt plant on the Brotherton side of Ferrybridge power station is due to be considered on 9th January 2004. Campaigners are urging local residents to object to the proposed development which they fear could have serious implications for local communities including Burton Salmon. Find out more about this proposal by visiting our Ferrybridge Asphalt Plant page.

December 2003

A public meeting was held at the Parish Hall, Brotherton, on 27th November 2003 to discuss a planning application for an asphalt plant on the site of Ferrybridge power station on the opposite side of the river from Brotherton Church. Issues of pollution, traffic, noise & the effect on house prices were discussed. Organisers of the meeting stated that the pollution could affect the area within several miles of the site. They are asking for support in objecting to the proposed development by writing stating objections to Mr T Reeves, Deputy Chief Executive, Housing & Regeneration Dept, Newton Bar, Wakefield WF1 2TX (quoting planning application no. 03/99/10784/BQ). Find out more.

Doorstep Recycling
Things seem to have become a little confusing with the delivery of the new green boxes (for recycling paper) which will now be collected on alternate Thursdays (with effect from Thursday 4th September) along with the blue box (for glass). The new system is organised by Selby DC. It seems unclear what will happen over the old blue box collection (alternate Wednesdays) which was organised for the Parish and did generate some direct revenue for the village.

September 2003

A1(M) Update
The meeting held on 31st July 2003 brought together many of the interested parties and allowed a wide-ranging discussion of the issues involved and the concerns of residents. We hope you to update you soon on specific points raised.

July 2003
Parish Council Meeting 7.30pm Monday 21st July 2003
The meeting attracted considerable interest (an audience of 19), largely due to concerns about the A1(M) development which some residents fear will affect the village adversely (especially because of increased noise levels). A meeting has been arranged for 31st July 2003 at the home of one of the residents to the west side of the A162. Although not a public meeting, it is hoped that it will be attended by our local MP, representatives of the Parish Council and District Council and agencies involved with the construction work. The Parish Council agreed to circulate a letter to all residents asking for comments on the subject of the A1(M) which could then be raised where appropriate at the meeting on 31st July. A public meeting may then be organised in due course.

July 2003
Cricket Club Update
Half way through the season, Burton Salmon are currently at the top of the York Vale League Division 3 having won 8 from 9 games so far. They were beaten in the Scothern Cup by Selby but have made it to the semi-final of the Prendergast Trophy. This match will be away against Malton on 10th August. The club play down the 'Common' and are at home on the Saturdays shown in the Village Events section. You are invited to go along and watch or to have a tea or refreshments.

June 2003
Children in Need Events
Last year's successful events organised by Carole and Graham and their customers at The Plough raised a great deal of money for this very worthwhile cause. Well done! One highlight was the 5-a-side football competition held on the school field on August Bank Holiday. It was well supported and great fun. Organisers are considering another event this year and your help and support would be appreciated. We will let you know as details become available.

June 2003
Meeting of Parish Council
Held at the Methodist Church at 7.30pm Monday 2nd June 2003.

May 2003
Broadband Internet Access - Update
You may remember this subject being raised in February. Broadband Internet access promises connection speeds up to 10 times faster than a standard modem. The only question is will we be able to get it? The answer from www.bt.com is that Broadband from BT will only work if your home is less than approximately 5.5km from your local telephone exchange. The total distance from the local exchange to Burton Salmon is longer than this, which means that even though Broadband from BT is due to be available in our area from 21st May 2003, we may not be able to take advantage of it just yet.

May 2003
Meeting of Parish Council - Monday 12th May 2003
The Annual Parish Meeting followed by the Parish Council Meeting was held at the Methodist Church. A wide range of issues were discussed including construction work on the A1 relief road which is now well under way in our area (an open meeting may be arranged in the near future to discuss concerns and implications for our village), litter and dumping of waste in various locations around the village and the refurbishment of the village War Memorial which is now complete.

May 2003
Burton Salmon Cricket Club
The club play down the 'Common' and are at home on the Saturdays shown in the Village Events section. You are invited to go along and watch or to have a tea or refreshments. They are on the look out for new talent after winning the York Vale League Fourth Division last summer and getting promoted to the Third Division. They are off to a good start this season too (played three league games and won three - the last one was against Askham Bryan where Burton Salmon scored 205 for 6 and their opponents only managed 27 all out). They are currently leading Division 3. The cup match  versus Selby on Saturday 17th May was rained off and will be played on 1st June weather permitting. So if you fancy you can play a bit or would like to learn or even to keep fit, then why not go along and join them on practice night, Thursday 7.00pm, and have a go. The club has recently acquired a motor driven roller, for which they received no outside financial help and their next project is to upgrade the toilet facilities. As a result their finances are somewhat stretched so they are looking for Vice Presidents and Match Ball sponsors. The going rate is Vice-President £10.00 and Match Ball sponsor £25.00, but any contributions will be most welcome.

February 2003
Broadband Internet Access
A leaflet has been distributed recently in the village about Broadband Internet access (Broadband promises connection speeds up to 10 times faster than a standard modem). The leaflet asks residents who want more information to visit www.bt.com. We checked the BT site and our information is that, for the time being at least, houses more than 5.5 kms from the local BT exchange (this includes the whole of Burton Salmon) cannot have Broadband even if the exchange were to be upgraded.

The chairman underlined the council's interest in the defibrillator scheme in our area. There was no specific news although volunteers are needed to operate the defibrillators. Find out more
The issue of services for older people was discussed including what facilities and opportunities exist.
Planning applications were discussed, including the proposed development at Poole Farm.

January 2003
Parish Council Meeting
A meeting of the Parish Council was held at 7.30pm Monday 13th January 2003 in the Methodist Church, Main Street, Burton Salmon. Minutes of the meeting will be displayed on the village notice board in due course.
Amongst the items discussed was funding for the refurbishment of the village War Memorial. A grant of approximately £800 has been approved from Waste Recycling which will cover the cost of refurbishment.
The village Christmas event was also discussed and it was agreed that existing funds were sufficient to meet the cost of a Christmas 2003 village event which was estimated to be around £100 (including Christmas tree and replacement lights).
The part time post of street cleaner is currently vacant.

January 2003
Christmas and New Year Waste Collection Service
Apparently some residents had problems with the refuse collection service during the holiday period and were left with up to three weeks' of refuse by the New Year. Mr Henshaw at Selby District Council (Refuse Collection) is dealing with complaints and can be contacted via the Selby District Council website www.selby.gov.uk.

January 2003
Ferrybridge Refuse Tip
On a related note, because Ferrybridge Refuse Tip has been available to Wakefield Met residents only since September 2002 (permits now required), additional refuse collection points have apparently been arranged on various Saturdays over the next few weeks. Details are on the village notice board.

December 2002
The Village Christmas Party
Held on Wednesday 11th December 2002 in the Methodist Church hall. It was jointly organised by the Parish Council and Friends of Burton Salmon School with the help and support of volunteers from around the village and was a great success. Around 75 people came along to see the switching on of the Village Christmas lights and to meet Father Christmas who gave each of the children a gift. Free drinks and mince pies added to the festive cheer and people showed their appreciation generously by supporting the raffle and "Beat the Buzzer" stall raising £25.00* for Friends of Burton Salmon School (*thank you to Burton Salmon Parish Council for agreeing to pay the cost of hall hire). Thanks to everyone who helped to make this event a success - including the volunteers who served the refreshments, put up the Christmas tree and lights, the young people who helped with the raffle and stall, everyone who supported the event, the Parish Council who paid for the Christmas tree and everyone at the Methodist Church for their hospitality and help, not forgetting the people who generously donated the Christmas cake as a raffle prize and the refreshments.

November 2002
Defibrillator Scheme
A meeting was held in Monk Fryston Church Hall on 26th November 2002 to discuss the issue of life-saving portable defibrillators in our area. Not only is this a vital health issue, but it is also a great success story of a group of dedicated local people who have enlisted the support of their local communities in raising a great deal of money. Congratulations to everyone involved.
